One of Malmesbury's principle tourist attractions, The Abbey House Gardens , featured on Gardeners World on June 28th 2002. The popular BBC2 programme, presented by Alan Titchmarsh, described a year in the life of the Gardens.
Filming took place on four separate occasions to demonstrate not just how they looked during the different seasons, but also the work involved in maintaining them.
First we saw them in the height of summer in all their colour. As well as seeing Ian Pollard carrying out the necessary work to allow the flowers in bloom to appear their best, we also saw Barbara Pollard introducing the place to visitors. The next section was autumn with the gardens now closed to visitors, bulbs being planted and general preparation for the next year. February found them still busy, in particular Ian building his waterfall. Finally spring had arrived, the tulips were in full bloom and the waterfall was giving a new dimension to an area of the garden that had previously appeared less interesting.
The BBC are to be congratulated on producing a programme that did justice to the gardens. It really captured the spirit of the place, including its relationship to the Abbey, and showed how much Ian and Barbara Pollard have achieved in the short time since they acquired Abbey House in 1994.
