FRANCESCA LESLEY ALDEN-FENN BA (Hons). P.G.C.E.

Francesca in Malmesbury Abbey

The designer of the Eilmer logo has lived in Malmesbury since 1994. She works at the Malmesbury Abbey Bookshop as their cards and Giftware buyer/display specialist and in this role her skills have been used to some benefit. She has produced the artwork for the 1995 to 2002 Abbey Christmas cards, as well as the 'Malmesbury Railway' card, notelets and postcards of the Market Cross and Abbey.

She is pleased to take commissions, and can be contacted at

Having wide interests and experience in art, she has held several successful exhibitions, which have established her as a freelance artist. Using a wide variety of media she has produced a number of commissioned works for the commercial market. These have been both varied and diverse, ranging from illustrations for greeting cards and T-shirts, through to business logo's.

Private commissions have enabled her to produce numerous pieces, including scenic views, portraites, animal portraites and architectural illustrations. Many of these have allowed her to capture glimpses of the wonderful surrounding countryside and its atmosphere.

A recent high point for her, was that during the visit by Her Majesty the Queen in December 2001, she was very honoured to be requested to produce a small water colour of the Malmesbury Abbey Altar Frontal, to be included in a presentation given to the Queen.

Prior to moving to Malmesbury in 1994, she had completed her studies in Three Dimensional Design, specialising in Silversmithing and Jewellery. During her final year, she won a competition organised by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths and Jewellers of Great Britain and Ireland, for one of her Silversmithing designs. After graduating, she went on to obtain a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, which qualified her to teach Craft Design Technology.

She was able then to secure a post in the Museum and Education Service. In this role she contributed to exhibition work, restoration and the design and construction of teaching aids for both schools and colleges. This work was very diverse and ranged from such things as the construction of a scale model butchers shop, complete with realistic meat, to the reproduction of ancient Egyptian artefacts; thus giving the children a chance to handle these items, unlike the original priceless museum treasures.

For the future she has a whole range of new ideas and designs that may be incorporated in the Abbey shop, as well as a number that will shortly be available in the commercial market.

For Christmas 2008 she produced this card, which is obtainable from the Malmesbury Abbey Bookshop.
